One Site, Four Days, Four Different Trojans

Analysis of the site everclipz.com provides a grim reminder of the challenges and limitations of anti-malware software. . (Warning:Please do not visit the site, it is potentially very very risky, downloading a variant of the Zlob trojan). I had first hit upon the site on the first of January, looking for an “additional media codec” to improve upon my malware collection. It was looking like a run of the mill spoof of PornTube, but it was linked to by plenty of other infected sites. (BTW, I have to thank Microsoft Live Search for getting the site, I was getting bored not getting plenty of infected links on Google, interesting for me perhaps, but it is extremely risky for the general public). I downloaded the “active X control” in my Opera browser and scanned it for viruses on Virus total. Only fourteen engines could detect it. Of course, I thought that it was a new variant, but was curious how the vendors would respond to this threat.

I followed up on the site again on the third of January, and was surprised. A new variant of the trojan was being downloaded, which was again detected by only fourteen new anti-viruses.The same story was repeated on the fourth and on the fifth. The malware distributor was moving before the anti-virus vendors could respond. Inspite of updated signatures showing slightly improved detection rates by anti-viruses, the risk to the end user visiting the site remained the same. Therefore, the updated signatures seem to be a giant waste of manpower and time for the anti-viruses. Making custom malware has become very common, with DIY kits being found in the underground.

What is the moral of the story?

Do not depend on signature based detection. It is useful in some cases, but in the face of todays web based threats, it has lost its sheen
Additional protective measures must be used. In my case, even though Avast! Could not detect any of the viruses first time, it provided protection by recognizing and blocking the malicious url (pic given below). A similar functionality should be found in AVG Link Scanner. Look to prevent going to the sites. However, it has to be recognized that these mechanisms will also fail, as a result of which the following two points are extremely important.

Protection by means of limited accounts and a policy of distrust towards web downloads goes a long way.
Do not go searching for trouble. You, ultimately are responsible for your own security. And look out for potential signals of trouble. In this case, it was quite clear, a third party site spoofing as PornTube, and then asking for aan “Active X control “ in Opera.

Picture: Looking at the address bar shows that the website is fake. The "video Active X display" should make one even more suspicious. Finally, using a limited account with parental controls will go a long way in protecting you.

Situation :

You are done trying scanning (which our lame outdated free AVG etc Antivirus software), or safe mode, system restore, system recovery and all those tricks in your bag but your computer is still messed up. Then there are 2 reasons

Hardware
1. Dust on fan/RAM chip / Hardidsk/Motherboard (clean it then)
2. Some device is damaged (go to mechanic)
3. Some hardware setting is messed up : (format Harddisk, reinstall Xp/Vista.)
Virus. : (this article deals only with this part.)

ask yourself the question 1^st why did you get the virus in your system ?

Because you're still using the antivirus product that came with your computer (like AVG/Avira/Avast/Norton/Macafee)
Chances are their licence is expired
AVG etc have free antivirus - but the limitation is, you don't get protection of firewall or antispyware.
You did not update the virus definitions.

Why Kaspersky internet security 2010?

Because its launched on 23^rd July 2009 = latest

It has built in firewall, antispyware so it'll take care of anything AND everything malicious in your system : also comes with wifi scanner so nobody messes with your wifi again.

Now come back to you computer. Launch the installation file "kis9.0.0.463en.exe" (or whatever name you gave to it) .

Once it launches – Kaspersky will do a few restarts until its done installing (since it comes with a 'self-defence' hence virus in your system can't harm it while its installing.)

Once you are done installing- hit the taskbar icon - it launches the Kaspersky window > select "Scan my Computer tab

But what is important for you at this moment? – fix your computer right? so think later about what'll you do after 30 days.

Ofcourse there are other freeware solutions to this but this thing is the most professional and userfriendly solution and easiest of the all options.

Some while ago i talked about HotspotShield and that it allowed me to browse U.S. only sites without too much fuzz, well recently HotspotShield has been failing me. Every time it gets connected to the Virtual private network (VPN) i get horrible speeds and then i get disconnected. This sucks so i was forced to find an alternative, i ended up with UltraSurf. This small and portable program was originally created to allow people in information repressed countries to browse websites that are banned by their goverment. Just download and run the executable (u.exe) and UltraSurf will automatically open Internet Explorer using a U.S IP, extra options include the ability to delete the cookies and history of Internet explorer when closing UltraSurf along with IE itself. If you don't like using IE too much (i can't blame you) there is also a Firefox addon available but i couldn't make it work, maybe you'll have better luck than me. While using UltraSurf for browsing webpages worked well and fast (no ads!) i did encounter some problems on specific pages, sites Like Hulu and Pandora just won't work when trying to streaming content, maybe UltraSurf has them disabled so that they don't suck all of their bandwidth, it's a free service after all. In conclusion UltraSurf is probably more useful for bypassing your work's internet filters than for watching video on Hulu when you are outside the U.S. Available for all Windows versions (I think...)

Warning: It has come that my attention that UltraSurf has been flag as a trojan by some antiviruses and therefore it maybe dangerous so use it at your own risk. I never did encounter problems but just to be at the side of caution i erased Ultrasurf from my PC. I am truly sorry for posting software that maybe potentially dangerous but it seemed pretty legit legit to me and it worked as advertised so i wrote about it. Anyway only use this software if you are willing to take a risk with it.

I ll show u step by step process for successfully creating keylogger, sending it, and receiving information using Ardamax Keylogger. Now, in this guide, I only use one method of receiving information, and that's an FTP. I also do not protect the files.
Process begins click here u ll move to a Adramax site and scroll down the page and download the free trial version.

After downloading, open the program and install it. Simple enough, right? After installing, go to wherever you installed it at, and open it. It should open at the bottom right corner of your screen, down by the time. If not, press ctrl+shift+alt+h. Now, leave that alone.

Next, click here and download the exact serial

Now, open it, and it should give you a name and a jumble of letters and numbers.

Go back to the Ardamax icon at the bottom right, and right-click it.

Click the "Enter Registration Key" button.

Use your serial/crack to unlock the full version. Congratulations, you are now ready to make your first deployment package.

If u interested in attaching a keylogger for an already existed file, move on and just place it on ur desktop.

From this point, click next.

Now, this part is self explanatory. I tick all of the boxes, as to hide it from everything visible, otherwise they can just see it and be like "Wtf", uninstall, etc.

Can't have that, now can we?

Click next.

For Security, do what you want. I leave all of it as-is and click next again.

Now, untick the "Check for updates" box, else it will check for updates on their computer and they will know that they are bugged.

Click next.

Tick the "Start in hidden mode" box, and leave the "Run on windows startup" as-is.

You may pick a date to self destruct, if you like. Sounds noisy, right? It simply removes itself on selected date. If not, leave it alone, and it will never self destruct.

Click next.

Tick the "Send logs every.." box, and choose how frequently you would like to recieve information that has been sent.

Select 'FTP' and de-select everything else as a delivery method.

You may choose what you want to see. I have taken " screenshots". as it cause lagging .

You Leav dat 'log format' alonee.

U can choosee 2 send logs if it is exceeding to a certain size, or if ur interested in send no matter wat, untic the box, wat i have done.

Head on over to:

Make an account, etc etc.

Save your FTP Account name and password. You'll need it in a moment.

This site will be the site that holds all information recieved by the keylogger.

When you're done, scroll down a bit.

Under "FTP Accounts", click "File Manager".

Near the top, click the "New Dir" button, and create a directory by any name you want. My favorite is "lolbeans".

Now, hold that thought. Bring the keylogger back.

In Ftp Host, put in:

ftp.phpnet.us

In "Remote Folder", put in the new directory's name you made. So, in this scenario, "lolbeans" without the "'s.

Fill in your Username and Password.

I left dat "Passive Mode checked" as I'm not aware of what it does, rofl. :[

you can leave dat port also alone . It's default.

You have to be sure that everything till now is correctly done by u , click it on test. It should tell you it all went through. And to double check, you can refresh your open window. Click your "lolbeans" directory and there should be a test file in it.

Click next, if you're still alive.

Tick anything and everything you want.

Next.

If you selected screenshots to be enabled, pick how you want them delivered. Click next. If not, ignore this step.

Browse the page wer u want to place da keylogger. u have a plus point of changing the icon, which is nifty. If u want to apologies to ur friend, u can change & make ur own icon just goto notepad and name it as "Apology", dats it u r done with it
Next.

This screen will go over with you everything that you have chosen. Make sure it's all correct.

Click Finish.

Now, if you appended the keylogger to something, you're going to need to put the "install" (feel free to rename it so it's not so obvious) and appended file into a .zip or .rar file.

If not, you have the simple "Install" on your desktop. Also, feel free to rename it to something like "Apology" or "OMFGFunnypicture!!!.jpg"

Upload the file or .rar/.zip somewhere, and let your target download it. They will double click it, and on their end, nothing will happen, but secretly, they have been keylogged.

Check your FTP Directory that you made as frequently as you told it to send logs, and you'll have everything you need.
